Software / Games
Software is a program or series of instructions that tells the computer how to do certain things, examples are the operating system and games. You can get integrated software packages that usually include a word processor, database and spreadsheet. Often when you buy a computer package you will get some type of software. You can also buy other software as you need it - however make sure that the software is compatible with the operating system on your computer. Information on the minimum recommended system requirements are written on the packaging.
Buying second hand software
Make sure when you buy second hand software that it comes with appropriate installation codes and licences.
The operating system
An operating system (OS) is contained in all computers. The most common is Windows XP Home Edition. Other operating systems are XP Professional and Macintosh OSX (only for Apple Mac computers). When a computer is switched on the BIOS (basic input output system) allows the computer to "boot" or start and checks that everything is connected and working. The computer then loads the operating system into the RAM from the hard drive and allows you to use the computer.
Pirated software
Be wary of pirated software, it's illegal to have and use. It is sometimes loaded on a computer to make it more attractive.
Shareware
Many of the software packages on the market are shareware, which is often mistaken for pirated software. Shareware is offered on a trial basis and may be missing features of the retail version. If you decide to use it regularly, you are asked to send a payment to the authors.
