Community Work Order
A Community Work Order (CWO) can be ordered as a sentence by the Courts to reflect the public interest in ensuring that a person who commits an offence makes amends to the community for the offence by performing work that is of a benefit to the community. A CWO can also be undertaken in the case of fine default through the Fines Recovery Unit. The maximum aggregate hours which can be ordered is 480 hours.
Offenders must be assessed as suitable for the program before an order is made. Breach of a court ordered CWO carries a penalty of one day's imprisonment for each day not worked. Breach of a fine default CWO results in notification to the Fines Recovery Unit, who will take alternative action to recover the debt.
CWO supervisors are not paid by Northern Territory Correctional Services but are provided by the organisation which is the recipient of the work. Many of the supervisors are, therefore, unpaid volunteers.
