Home Detention
This program is normally used for adult offenders (18 years or older), and is a direct alternative to imprisonment. The court requests a suitability assessment, and the offender is sentenced to prison. The prison sentence is suspended on the offender entering a home detention order for up to 12 months. Conditions are very strict - remain at stated premises, not drink alcohol, and not leave the premises at any time without permission. Home detainees are subject to random checks (at home and work), breath and urine testing and may be required to wear electronic surveillance devices.
Home detention surveillance officers are casual employees hired by the hour to perform basic surveillance and checking functions only. All breach actions are taken by statutory Probation and Parole Officers.
