Racing and Betting
The Racing Division within Racing, Gaming and Licensing is responsible for the Territory's regulatory regime for wagering, and enforces licensing standards.
Racing
The major race clubs in the Northern Territory are the Darwin Turf Club, the Alice Springs Turf Club and the Darwin Greyhound Association.
Thoroughbred Racing NT Incorporated is the Principal Club for the Northern Territory.
The Darwin Cup Carnival usually runs from July into early August each year, while the Alice Springs Turf Club has its major carnival in April/May.
The Darwin Greyhound Association generally conducts meetings every Friday night at Winnellie Park in Darwin.
The Racing Commission has responsibility for the NT Racing Industry. It is a body corporate established in accordance with the Racing and Betting Act. and generally meets on a monthly basis.
Sports Betting
The Northern Territory approved Australia’s first sports bookmaker in December 1992. The business, Centrebet, based in Alice Springs, was established by long-time Territory bookmaker Terry Lillis. Centrebet was also Australia’s first on-line sports bookmaker, commencing Internet wagering in August 1996.
The Territory now hosts nine other sports bookmakers, seven in Darwin and two in Alice Springs.
The Territory is Australia’s leader in sports bookmaking and is highly regarded for its progressive and innovative approach. It allows corporate licences and 24/7 trading.
The Licensing Commission is responsible for the regulation of the Totalisator Licensing & Regulation Act that allows NTTAB to conduct totalisator betting in the Northern Territory.
